Lila Yawn completed her Ph.D. in art history with a minor in medieval studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004, supported by fellowships from the Pogue Foundation (1987-1990), the Rotary Foundation (1995-1996), the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (Broneer Fellow, 1999-2000), and the American Academy in Rome, where she was awarded the Rome Prize (1996-1998). Since 2004 she has taught courses in the history of art for American universities in Rome, including John Cabot University, Cornell University, Rutgers University, the American University of Rome, IES, and Trinity College of Hartford. She also serves as a member of the advisory board of the Friends of Florence and as an Arts and Humanities Advisor of the American Academy in Rome, where she has been a Fellow since 1997.
