About

I work on Italy in the First World War and my research interests range from military through to cultural and social history. After completing my doctorate on "Morale and discipline in the Italian Army, 1915-18" I have carried out research on topics including memory and commemoration, leadership and mass surrender, and cultural mobilization through civilian patriotic associations.

I have published book chapters on generals' decision-making during the battle of Caporetto in 1917 and also on the ways in which  this battle was remembered and mythologised during the 1920s.

I am intending to begin a major new research project on Italy and her Allies 1914-18, examining the role of Italy within first the Triple Alliance and then the Entente, and evaluating the contribution of Italy to the Allied war effort.
